Annie is an 11-year- old student who received Mental Health Counseling from Family Foundations. Her parents sought help from her school’s Guidance Counselor because Annie was struggling with self-esteem as a result of an identified learning disability.
Her Mental Health Therapist who works with the Full Service School Program quickly recognized that Annie often had difficulty in recognizing her own positive traits. After only a few sessions, Annie and her therapist gained a rapport. Her therapist introduced therapeutic activities using art and writing. Annie developed collages of herself and her strengths as well as creating an “About Me” book in which she wrote about her strengths, her role model, and her future goals.
Through this work, Annie developed coping skills so when she starts feeling anxious, she can identify self-defeating thoughts and turn them to positive thoughts. Annie utilizes her dancing skills to builder her self-esteem.
