Homebuyer Education

Whether you’re buying your first home or re-entering the housing market after a long absence, purchasing your first home can be exciting, but also a little overwhelming.  Family Foundations can help get you started in the right direction. Our homebuyer education course, Make Your Move…A Guide to Homeownership©, takes you through all of the steps of buying your first home.  You’ll learn what to expect as you look for your dream home and how to avoid common and costly mistakes.  Make Your Move also meets HUD guidelines for pre-purchase homebuyer education.

Make Your Move covers topics such as:

  • being financially ready to buy a house
  • getting pre-qualified
  • types of loans and insurance
  • building vs. buying a home
  • closing on your house
  • learning your responsibilities as a homeowner, and
  • maintaining and repairing your home.

Make Your Move is a comprehensive homebuying guide developed b the American Center for Credit Education (ACCE).

Class Options and Registration

Family Foundations offers two options for you to take the course: in-person and on-line; both class formats use the same materials. The in-person course is more interactive and allows you to engage with the instructor and ask questions and clarify concepts. The on-line course is self-paced and allows you flexibility to fit it in to your busy schedule.

As part of the course, you will be required to meet with a Counselor for a brief individual session.  After completion of the course and counseling session, you will receive a Certificate of Attendance (Homebuyer Education Certificate) that can be shared with your lender.

The cost of the workshop is $100/household and includes the cost for the individual counseling session and a copy of your tri-merge credit report. Two members of the same household purchasing a home together are permitted to attend the workshop; there is an additional $30 fee for couples for the cost of the credit report.  In-person classes are taught or overseen by a HUD-certified housing counselor  and are held several times during each month, usually on a Tuesday and Saturday; the in-person class may be held at our main office located at 40 E. Adams St., Jacksonville, FL or via Zoom.  The schedule can be found on our Events calendar or by clicking on the link below.  If you are unable to find an in-person class that fits your schedule, you can enroll in our on-line class; this format also offers an option to take the class in Spanish.  REMINDER: All classes require you to meet with a Counselor before we issue your certificate

SATISFACTION
& RESULTS

Family Foundations homeownership instruction meets all quality standards and receives rave reviews from our participants, with over 98% reporting satisfaction.

I honestly only signed up for this class because I was told I had to by my lender.  But, after taking the class I wish I had taken it at the start of my home-buying process instead of the end. Take advantage of the instructor’s wealth of knowledge.

The 8 hours were totally worth my time.  I left the class feeling like I had the knowledge to make an informed decision for my family.
